33 Weeks - My Baby Seems Stuck in One Position
by Alison Royine
(Brisbane, QLD, Australia)
We have been for a scan at the doctors and have noticed a pronounced bump, almost pointy to an extent. They thought it was excess fluid, or a hernia, but after the scan they confirmed it was the position of the baby's feet. (doctor described it as the same thing as when a child pushes the sheets up and it sorts of makes a point).
I am really worried as they say they have never seen anything like this... really worried that something will be wrong with my baby's legs. Although the doctors have said the hips and legs look fine. They just said it is odd for the legs to be pushed up like that al the time.
Any help or advice would be really welcomed....

Hi Alison,
As babies get bigger their movement in the womb is very restricted. It's pretty normal for them to stay in just one position. They may turn from side-to-side or even roll over, but most babies have found a position they favor and stay there.
Though your doctor seems to think it's unusual, I know that a couple of my babies have stuck a little foot out and it has stayed out like a little bump for a few days. I've also had two babies that liked to wedge fists in a very uncomfortable way around my hip - and keep them there despite my efforts to encourage them to move!
Babies are also curled up in the womb, so their bodies and legs are used to a "strange" position. Almost all newborns have little "frog legs" - their legs are curved slightly like a little frogs. This is because of positioning in the womb, and it gradually corrects itself as their bodies get used to being stretched out and free.
I would guess that your baby is fine, but there's a lot you can do to affect baby positioning if you're worried. Your posture, yoga, swimming, etc. are all great ways to encourage your baby to take a good position.
My article on turning breeches has information on
good positioning - pay attention to the section on the pelvic tilt and posture.
Best of luck with the rest of your pregnancy and enjoy welcoming your little one!
