Amniocentesis on Twins

Can amniocentesis be done on twins?

Answer:

Hi Lola,

Amniocentesis can be done on twins. If decide to get it done, look for a clinic that does ultrasound monitoring throughout the procedure so they will not have to use a dye.

They'll be able to see the membrane between amniotic sacs and determine where they need to insert the needle.

If a dye must be used, indigo carmine is considered mostly safe. Methylene blue is not safe and you should decline its use - it has been linked to intestinal problems in babies.

Amniocentesis always carries with it inherent risks - including risk of miscarriage and loss of one or both babies. You can read more about the procedure in general in my article on amnios:

Best of luck to you Lola!
