Baby Hair Care

My dd is 18 month and has a really beautiful curly hair. But it is kind of dry hair and I don't want to use hair conditioner, I'm looking for something more natural. Any suggestions? Thanks!

Hi Lori,

I definitely recommend you use only very natural products on her hair. Also consider how often you're washing it.

If she's not getting food in it or getting really dirty you don't need to wash her hair daily. Her hair may benefit from less frequent washings.

You can usually find natural kids' haircare products at a natural foods store, but be careful when you're shopping. A lot of them still have harsh ingredients in them.

I like Weleda baby products - they're what I use with my own babies.

One thing you may consider for her hair is Jojoba Oil. I haven't personally used it, though I have been planning on trying it on my own ends.

It's more expensive than some other oils but it's supposed to be the closest to our natural hair oils you can get.

To use it you take a tiny, tiny amount and rub it between your palms to warm it up. There will be a light coating on your hands. Then you take and pull the ends of her tresses down gently between your palms so they get a light coating of the oil.

Like I said, I haven't tried this but I've gotten several recommendations to try it for my own hair, so I'll pass the tip on. I think it would be good for a child with dry hair because it's a totally natural oil. I'll probably try it in my daughter's hair, too.

my experience with a curly-haired girl with long hair
by: Nessa

My 2.5yo daughter has some SERIOUSLY curly hair. It is definitely drier than her older sister's, whose hair is poker straight. What helps for us, is to keep the hair around her face pulled back, either into a partial pony tail, or partial piggies - that helps with tangling at least.

Secondly, I try to comb her hair every day. I start with the ends (like you would with a snarl) and sort of gently comb with a very wide tooth comb. We don't take baths every night, and we don't wash hair every bath, even, so I usually do this dry. Then I spray water on it after and scrunch with the tiniest bit of sweet almond oil or olive oil rubbed into my hands (like Kristen's suggestion with the the jojoba oil).

The other day, though, I found "Dr. Bronner's Magic 'all-in-one' Organic Fair Trade Hair Creme". It's a leave-in "conditioner" with the following ingredients: water, organic coconut oil, organic ethanol (denatured with organic lavender oil), organic jojoba oil, organic hemp oil, organic quillaja extract, tocopherols. So far, so good. Since I've recently switched to a shampoo bar, I use it on my (dry & wavy) hair, too. :) Warning, though, a very little goes a very long way.
