Baby Starting to Drop Already?

If you start to drop at seven months does it mean that your baby is getting in position for labor? Does it mean that the baby might come before the due date?
Answer:
Hi Shanleisha,
Typically in first pregnancies babies drop lower several weeks before the baby's birth. In later pregnancies babies tend to stay high until just before labor begins.
Usually you don't need to worry if you notice that your baby has dropped in the third trimester - it often happens! Also, babies shift position a lot and things change depending on how full your bladder is, how full your stomach is, etc.
If you've only noticed that the baby is lower I wouldn't worry, or bring it up at your next prenatal appointment.
However, if you feel a lot of strong downward pressure, cramping, regular contractions, see bits of the mucus plug, etc. I would immediately call your doctor or midwife. It's better to be safe and be sure it's not pre-term labor.
Chances are your baby is just moving lower as part of your baby and body's gradual preparation for labor! Babies move down and the cervix even often begins dilating a bit as you get closer to labor. Remember, if you're worried it's best to call your doctor or midwife.
