Can a Pregnant Mom Breastfeed Our 1 Year Old?

by anas

My wife got pregnant in last month. We have a 1 year old baby. Can she continue breast feed the baby? Is this harmful or not?

Answer:

Hi Anas,

In almost all cases it is OK for a woman to breastfeed an older baby or toddler during pregnancy.

Your wife's milk supply may drop as her pregnancy progresses and some women find it hard to breastfeed during pregnancy because it can get irritating or painful. But many, many women nurse their older babies right through pregnancy.

It is also OK for her to nurse the older baby when the new baby is born. This is called Tandem nursing and it works just fine for both babies. Mom will make as much milk as is needed.

The only time breastfeeding during pregnancy is not advised is if the mother has a history of recurrent miscarriage.

Other than that, it's fine.

You may find the book Adventures in Tandem Nursing: Breastfeeding During Pregnancy and Beyond helpful :)
