Cord Around Neck - Can I Have a Natural Birth?

by Rishona
(Pune, Maharashtra)

This is my first childbirth and I'm in my ninth month. My baby has the cord around its neck two times, it's shown on the ultrasound report.

I want to give birth to my baby naturally, will I be able to?

Answer:

Hi Rishona,

Many babies are born with the cord around their neck once, twice, or even more times. They also sometimes have the cord around their bodies, arms, legs, etc. All of this is normal.

Usually having the cord around the neck doesn't stop a baby from being born via a natural birth. The cord loops are usually loose enough that they can just be pulled around the baby's head. Sometimes if it's tight it's cut right away when the baby is born - but usually it is not this tight.

Your doctor or midwife will probably know best what the answer is in your situation - but usually you can give birth naturally even when the cord is around your baby's neck.
