C-section

I'm 8 months pregnant. I was advise by my doctor that my baby is big at 34 1/2 weeks, and probably will have a C-section. I want to have a natural birth. what should I do? Some moms advise me to walk at least 30mins everyday..

Answer:

I have had two midwives between my four babies and both of them, and all of their midwife colleagues have helped big babies into the world - vaginally. I am talking about 11 and 12 pound babies - BIG babies.

I have had friends and family members birth 9 and 10 pound babies vaginally.

Determining a baby's size in the womb is also notoriously unreliable. Ultrasound can be off by one or two pounds, which is a huge difference for a newborn! Doctors and midwives are also often wrong when they feel the baby through your belly.

I had a doctor tell me that my first baby would probably be around 6 pounds... she was born weighing in at almost 8 pounds!

Larger babies are actually proven to be easier to birth than smaller babies. A baby around 8 or 9 pounds is easier to give birth to than a smaller baby - labors are often shorter and easier on mother and baby.

If you want to have a natural birth with your baby, you should be permitted to labor. If your doctor is forcing you into choosing a c-section, I would seriously consider trying to find a new doctor!

I encourage you to read my Birth Stories Pages - many, many mothers have shared their stories of giving birth to big babies - naturally!

Best of luck to you!

Unnecessarean

This sounds like a common scare tactic used by doctors to schedule babies. Most c-sections occur between 9-5 Mon-Fri, although most c-sections are also listed as emergencies....

If they were truly emergencies I think we'd see a statistical spread throughout all hours of the day over all days of the week instead of a very easy to see relationship between hours docs want to work and don't.

As for big babies...I had a friend at my birth measure my hips at the onset of labor and they were 35 inches around, after 5 hours, my hips were 48 inches wide, 1 hour later my 7lb 13 oz baby girl was born.

The female body is capable of giving birth to big babies, it is pretty much designed that way.

Please consider another doctor or a midwife if you want natural birth, specifically request statistics of what percentage of labors resulted in transfer or cesarean depending on if you are asking doc or midwife.

Find out a track record before choosing a person to help you deliver your baby. you have a right to choose your birth experience, sometimes things happen and don't always go as planned, but your chance of a happy ending are better if you choose a health care professional that respects what you want more than "covering their butt".
