Does Pillow top bed inhibit infant spinal development

We have a non removable pillow top on our bed. Our 3 month old loves to sleep there, rather than on her hard crib mattress. Is there a risk of getting spinal problems/inhibit spinal development if she sleeps there as it doesn't support the spine as well as a hard mattress? She sleeps there only under my constant supervision so I am not worried about SIDS.

Answer:

A pillow-top mattress doesn't provide as much support as a firm mattress, but I think she will probably be fine. Babies sleep in many positions - curled on the bed, on their tummies, on their backs, curled in a sling, lying on a blanket on all types of ground, in hammocks, etc.

As long as your baby experiences a variety of positions every day, which she naturally will, she should be fine.

Obviously I'm not an expert on spinal development, however, so if you're truly concerned I would recommend checking with a professional. But babies have slept in all kinds of different beds/cribs/cots/ground throughout the ages and they're pretty hardy little things!

If your pillow-top is very plush you may want to put a firmer foam sleeper on top or use a co-sleeper so that you can be sure your baby isn't sinking deeply into the material of the topper.
