Flu Vaccination?

What are your thoughts about the flu, specifically the H1N1 vaccine? I have opted out of both vaccines because I feel that there is not enough research to prove they are safe.

Answer:

Nancy,

I agree with you - I don't feel there's enough research to prove the vaccine is safe. And I don't feel there's enough evidence to show it's a major protection from the flu.

I can't say "never" - but it is highly, highly unlikely that I would ever choose a vaccination when I was pregnant - that's just taking a huge risk with an unborn baby.

I also think that H1N1 and other flus, as well as most illnesses are just that - illnesses. They can be handled at home without hysteria.

I generally watch my children closely for signs of dehydration during any illness, but I allow the illness to run its course. I often use herbal tinctures or teas to aid the body's own healing efforts, and sometimes I'll use a homeopathic remedy.

But all in all I believe strongly in the body's ability to fight off infection and heal itself. I support all of my family, from the little ones to my husband and myself, with excellent nutrition (most of the time!) and I think that our bodies are ready to handle any sickness and come out fine from the other side of it.

My youngest was very sick last week - running a high fever for several days. But he continued to nurse well and showed no signs of dehydration. He was happy to be held by myself or my husband. His fever broke and he had a little vomiting episode, then took a couple of days to build strength back up - but now he's fine, and his body was able to handle even a harsh illness just fine.

In my opinion illnesses should be handled calmly and rationally, not with hysteria or propaganda-fueled treatments.

That said, I also believe in maintaining good relationship with a family doctor/care provider, if possible, so you have someone to call if you need someone to consult, or if an illness goes beyond your level of being comfortable in caring for it.

What is best?

Hello. My daughter has opted out of the swine flue vaccination but feels under pressure everywhere she goes due to leaflets, media etc.She is almost 32 weeks now,can you reassure her please? Thankyou.

Note from Kristen:

Tina,

Your daughter can feel confident in her choice. Here's some more info:

  • Multi-dose vials on the vaccine contain mercury, which is a known toxin to the unborn.

  • Some of the vaccines contain formaldehyde, which has been shown to increase risk of cancers

  • The vaccine has not been thoroughly tested, and in fact batches of it have been recalled!

  • Experts are not sure if this vaccine will lead to Guillain-Barre Syndrome (GBS) - the swine flu vaccine of 1976 did.

  • GBS and inflammation of brain have been reported after even the "regular" seasonal vaccine

  • We do not know the effects of the vaccine on unborn babies
