Flying During Pregnancy
Is it okay to have a long distance flight during pregnancy? I heard it is safer in the second trimester. I had my last period starting on 23.02. when does the second trimester start?
Answer:
The second trimester begins when you are around 13 weeks pregnant (some consider you second trimester when you hit 13 weeks, others when you hit 14 weeks). Your second trimester looks like it will start around the end of May.
Flying can be safe during pregnancy. In general you're advised not to fly in the month before your due date unless you have a note from your doctor or midwife stating that it is safe for you to do so.
Flying is safe during the first trimester, though you may notice that morning sickness and exhaustion are worse during and after the flight.
At any point in pregnancy you should be very careful while flying. Drink plenty of water - dehydration is a real concern that can be caused by the stress of flying. Also make sure that you use the bathroom when you need to. Get up and walk around every 20-30 minutes or so on a long flight - more often if you feel cramped or notice swelling.
Eat very well leading up to and after the flight. A snack on the flight (or a meal and snacks on a long flight) is a great idea. You want to make sure you get plenty of high-protein foods leading up to the flight, during the flight, and after. This will prevent complications. Also be sure to salt your food to taste to keep yourself hydrated and to keep your blood supply high for your baby.
Enjoy your trip!
