How Do I Care for the Belly Button?

by Joaquin
(Norwalk)

My baby's umbilical cord stump has fallen off. There's a belly button there now - does it need any special care?

Answer:

Once the cord has fallen off the belly button is pretty much the same as yours! Just clean it with warm water, or if you like you can use a gentle baby soap.

There's no need to scrub or pick at it. Gentle cleaning is fine.

If you notice dried blood or drainage you can bring it up with your baby's doctor - some babies have a small umbilical hernia that often resolves by the time the baby turns a year old. My first son Asher had this happen. Your doctor will want to keep an eye on it.

Chances are though, you just have a perfect belly button! Clean it gently as you clean the rest of baby ;)
