If I'm RH- and my baby is RH- do I need a shot?

Four years ago I gave birth to a beautiful baby boy. Before he was born, I was informed that I'm RH-. At the time I did not know what that meant. My son tested RH-. The doctors did not give me the shot. I want to know if it was necessary.

Hi Keamogetse,

If your son was RH-, then you did not need the shot. The only chance of sensitization comes if you are carrying and birthing an RH+ baby. Since your son was RH-, your body sees his blood the same as yours and no antibodies develop. You will be just fine for another pregnancy should you desire to conceive!
