Missed Twins on Ultrasound?

by Nibedita

I've had 3 ultrasounds which have all shown one baby. Is it possible the report may be wrong and that I may really have twins in there? My last period was October 3rd, 2010. How can I confirm twins?

Answer:

Hi Nibedita,

From what I understand, it is possible to miss twins on ultrasound early on in pregnancy because one baby can "hide." A poor quality machine can also make it hard to detect twins.

However, the farther along you get the more likely you are to see two babies on the ultrasound machine. You are still early enough in your pregnancy that a twin may have been missed, but a later scan should confirm a single baby or twins. I think it's less likely since you've had 3 scans already, but if you're concerned, ask your doctor or midwife about it at your next prenatal appointment!
