Possibility of Falling Pregnant 6 Weeks After Giving Birth?

I have had unprotected sex twice in the last two weeks, after giving birth 6 weeks ago. I am breastfeeding, and each time I had sex I have had a wash immediately. I haven't gotten my menstrual cycle back yet since childbirth. Is there any chance of falling pregnant?

Answer:

Since you are breastfeeding and haven't had your cycles return you are most likely infertile. However, women who are breastfeeding can and do get pregnant in the early weeks and months after giving birth. Having sex always carries with it the chance of a pregnancy.

Lactational amenorrhea is the technical term for breastfeeding infertility. You can feel fairly certain that it is providing effective infertility before your baby turns 6 months old if you meet certain requirements. This Kellymom.com article gives a good overview of the requirements for this method to provide a period of infertility.

Do keep in mind, though, that making love always has a chance of making a lovely baby :)
