Why does my provider wait till 28 weeks gestation before giving this shot?

Doesn't that give time for the baby to be hurt by the possible mixing of the blood?

Answer:

Hi Billy,

Usually the mother and baby's blood does not mix during pregnancy at all. The 28 week shot is precaution in case it does. But the blood supplies do not naturally mix during the course of a pregnancy.

After 28 weeks it may become more likely for it to happen, and the shot provides protection in that instance.

The risk of any blood mixing before 28 weeks is very, very low. However, there are some providers who give an earlier dose. It's also given after miscarriage or abortion.

If you feel strongly about it you can ask your care provider if he or she would be willing to give an earlier dose - but in reality the chance of sensitization is very low.
