Sharp Pains at 40 Weeks Pregnant

by Stephanie
(Indianapolis, Indiana )

I am 40 weeks pregnant and I am having really bad sharp pains in my vagina and in my upper thighs that actually stop me in my tracks. Does this mean I will go into labor soon and what is the pain from?

Answer:

Hi Stephanie,

Shooting pains in your vagina and upper thighs can be normal during pregnancy. They often result from pinched nerves. You can also feel stress or pain there as contractions start.

Generally the pain from contractions is felt low on the uterus and in your back - similar to where cramps are felt during a period.

Sharp pain can be normal, and it can also indicate problems, so if you're worried it's best to call your doctor or midwife and describe to them what you're feeling.

Best of luck - hopefully you're holding your own sweet baby by now :)
