Slight Bleeding with a Little Pain

by Leena
(India)

I'm 5 weeks pregnant today. This morning I had to walk a little and by noon I started bleeding - before that there was cramping pain just as during my period. After that bloody discharge it seemed to stop. I haven't bled since but slight pain is there in my stomach, why is this so? Is everything OK with my baby?

Answer:

Hi Leena,

Anytime you have bleeding or bloody discharge during pregnancy it's a good idea to call your doctor or midwife and let her know what's going on.

Spotting and even a little bleeding during pregnancy can be totally normal and many women have it in the first trimester. Slight cramping like period cramps are also pretty normal.

However, lots of bleeding and cramping can indicate and impending miscarriage. If possible you should try and take it easy for a few days. Put your feet up and relax - and give your doctor or midwife a call, too.
