What Type of Cloth Diapers?

by Janelle

I am overwhelmed with all the options of cloth diapers---fitted, all in ones, one size, prefolds, etc.

What kind of cloth diapers would you recommend? Is there a brand you especially like?

Thanks!
Janelle

Answer:

Hi Janelle,

The range of cloth diaper options is truly overwhelming!

I have tried a lot of cloth diapers with my four kiddos, and I have to admit I like prefolds best for a small baby.

I just find a prefold and a cover simplest to put on (I use Snappi fasteners), and easy to clean. Plus you can go with completely natural materials - cotton (or hemp) prefold and a wool cover. I like having natural materials on my babies.

For older babies I have found that pocket diapers can sometimes be easier, simply because they're fast to put on, and if you have a "smaller" baby they're not so bulky as the larger size prefolds.

But prefolds are still nice and versatile.

My favorite pocket diaper brand is BumGenius - I think they're well made and they work well. Plus I like the stretch sides that fit my babies :)

I also think supporting a work-at-home mom by buying her diapers is always a good choice. I would suggest picking a WAHM that gets good reviews for her diapers so you know you won't have issues with leaks! It's always good to support another mom!

Good luck trying to tame the diaper jungle ;)

It is VERY overwhelming when you are trying to build your fist stash. I agree that prefolded with covers are the most versatile and easy to use/mantain. Not to mention that is the cheapest option. I would start looking at Etsy.com where you can find a great variety and at the same time support a WAHM. Good luck!!!

FuzziBunz
by: Anonymous

We got a recommendation to try FuzziBunz and have really liked them. We started with some extra-smalls and smalls at first (had a tiny 6-lb baby!), because the one-size versions hadn't come out yet. Now we have the one-size version and love them. (And as an added bonus the re-sale of the small sizes was excellent!) They are a little poofy when the babies are little. But the only issue really is fitting into "skinny" pants. (Is it just me, or are they making baby pants snugger these days? All our hand-me-downs are plenty big but seems the newer pants don't work as well with cloth diapers.) It actually helped in our case at first, because our baby was too skinny for pants!

You do get away from natural materials, but it has worked really well for us. Minimal leaks, no diaper rash, and relatively easy to take on-and-off (when we offer the potty). If you leave the snaps buttoned you can almost treat them like a trainer and just pull on and off. We liked that option, because when we purchases we were interested in trying EC but weren't sure if we would stick with it and didn't have much money to invest in both diapers and training pants. Now we EC and yet also use diapers to catch misses. Has worked well for us. I also like that you can put extra liners in to adjust the amount of absorption.

There are other options with same idea available made by WAHM. We went with FuzziBunz because they were so highly recommended and because we could buy them locally. I'm sure other diapers are great too. We didn't try anything else with this one... but maybe we'll experiment more if we have money to play with for the next baby!

WAHM stands for "Work at Home Mom" - lots of moms make cloth diapers and I've always liked supporting other moms!
