At what point in time in a pregnancy does the head of the baby engage in the pelvis of a first time mother ?? Are there any specific do's and dont's for this to happen??

I am 33 years of age and am 31 weeks pregnant and also a first timer. Please give advice.

Answer:

Hi Chinky,

Usually baby engages in the pelvis of a first time mother about two weeks before labor begins. This is an average and isn't always the case, but it's frequently how it happens.

You don't really need to do anything to get your baby to engage as it usually happens quite naturally. However, if your baby is in a good position you can encourage your baby to nestle deeply in your pelvis by doing deep squats and climbing stairs.

Babies usually don't engage until the beginning of labor in subsequent pregnancies.

Best of luck to you with your upcoming birth!

Hi

This is my second pregnancy and the baby "dropped" or "engaged" at 31 weeks! Iam 35 weeks now. I did literally feel it dropping overnight, the weight of the baby now pushes down and I can feel the baby's head hitting my cervix when the baby turns its head, ouch! Other people also noticed my stomach being "lower" but all I could feel that I became very uncomfortable in my pelvic area overnight.

With my first pregnancy I went into labour at about 41-42 weeks and the baby never actually dropped prior to labour starting(maybe it happened during the labour or just before).

All the best
V
