Why is the Fetus in the Position it is In?

I have two daughters, both are pregnant and both have had scans. Why does one baby have their head to the right and the other to the left. Is there any reason for this?

Answer:

Babies usually just pick the position that they prefer. Mothers can influence the position by how they sit or what they do during the day. Slouching, for instance encourages babies to be more posterior, which isn't the best position for labor.

Most babies tend to move into one position or another as labor approaches and they prepare for the journey through the birth canal.

It's good for moms to sit up straight, spend some time on hands and knees, etc. to encourage babies to be in a good position. Once the baby is in a good position (anterior and facing slightly right is very good), it's often a good idea for mom to spend some time doing deep squats, climbing stairs, etc. These help baby settle deeply in the pelvis so it's less likely that he or she will change positions.
