Handle Labor Pain

Remember that a good birth begins in pregnancy. Now is the time to gather information about pregnancy, labor, and delivery. Don’t stop with just reading the information, though.

Really think about what you’ve read and make the changes that will give you the birth you’ve decided on for your baby. Improve your pregnancy nutrition so you’re strong, baby is strong, and both of you are healthy and ready for labor.

Really talk with your care provider so you know that he or she understand what you’d like for your baby’s birthday. Cover issues that you’re concerned about and be sure to let your care provider know that you’re committed and you’re preparing to give birth naturally. Many women say they want to go all natural, but don’t prepare. Nurses, doctors, and midwives see a lot of really overwhelmed moms who aren’t sure how to handle labor – you want your team to understand that you’re ready!

Finally, really practice the skills and techniques that you’ve chosen to use during labor. This can mean breathing, positions, etc. Picturing your baby’s birth, and practicing your labor techniques, gives you an advantage during birth. Those things are likely to come to you more naturally and easily (and come to your labor coach, too). That means labor goes smoother and you’re able to focus on what counts – working with your baby to help him or her be born!!
