Scope 040: Open Q&A – Myth of the Old Placenta

The myth of the old placenta

Have you been told that your placenta gets old and fails? Stories of geriatric placentas are frequently used to scare moms-to-be about the dangers of going “overdue,” but the reality is, evidence does not support that the placenta begins to fail past your “due date.” Placentas can fail at any point during pregnancy, and going past a magical, medical, number, does not make the placenta a ticking time bomb. This scope delves into the placenta myth.
