Valerie’s Baby – an Unassisted Birth

by Valerie, USA

I had been having Braxton Hicks contractions for a couple months. At 10:30pm it seemed to be just another contraction that maybe lasted a little longer than most… or was I just tired? So I made myself go to bed and get some sleep. Tossed and turned for 20 minutes until I thought maybe I needed to use the bathroom and then I'd be able to rest easier.

(10:50 pm) While on toilet had another braxton hicks and wiped a little blood so I got on the phone to the midwife. We both thought things were progressing and baby would be here sometime early the next day. She said to call her back if anything chaged.

So, still on the toilet, I called my husband into the bathroom and told him I had called the midwife. We sat across from each other just calmly talking about what would be happening in the next 24 hours.

Suddenly I got an urge to push and my water broke! I reached down and could feel baby's head crowning. Although a million thoughts went through my head all I could get out of my mouth was “Baby! Baby! Baby!”

My husband helped me to the bed and called the midwife. While on the phone with the midwife our darling daughter was born at 11:18pm!

I am thankful we had our first child at home so we were able to stay calm and enjoy the unplanned unassisted birth of our second child.
